01/12/2009 - Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Bill Bayno has stepped down as Loyola Marymount men's head basketball coach and the school signed Max Good to a multi-year deal to take Bayno's place.
Good had been acting coach of the team since November 24 when Bayno, who has been fighting an undisclosed, serious medical condition, took a leave of absence to concentrate on his treatment.
"Due to medical reasons and on the advice of my doctors, I am resigning from my duties as head men's basketball coach at Loyola Marymount," said Bayno. "I sincerely apologize for any disappointment this might cause the fans, the administration, the students and most importantly my players, their families and my coaching staff."
Bayno, hired in April after a stint in the NBA as an assistant with Portland, was also the head coach at UNLV from 1995 to 2000, compiling a 95-65 record with the Runnin' Rebels while twice reaching the NCAA Tournament. He was fired during the 2000-01 season after alleged recruiting violations of Lamar Odom, who ultimately went to Rhode Island.
Good, meanwhile, becomes the 25th coach in school history and in his first season with the Lions his team has a record of 1-16.
"In selecting our next head coach, one only needs to read Max's resume to learn what an outstanding coach he has been at every lever that he has worked," said athletic director Dr. William Husak. "His reputation as a master teacher and strategist who expects the very best of his players is well documented."
It is Good's 15th season as a college head coach as he spent eight seasons at Bryant College (2001-08), one season at UNLV (2000-01) and five seasons with Eastern Kentucky University (1985-90). His overall coaching record is 229-225.
