Etherington close to new Stoke deal

06/07/2010 - Stoke-on-Trent, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has confirmed that Matthew Etherington is close to penning a new contract at the Britannia Stadium.

The former West Ham star enjoyed a fine 2009-10 campaign and was voted the team's player of the year, prompting the Potters to open negotiations about a new deal.

Etherington, who still has two years left of his current Stoke deal, has scored seven goals in 52 appearances during his 18-month stay with the club.

Pulis told the Sentinel: "Matty and his agent have just had another meeting with (chief executive) Tony Scholes and from what I hear they're definitely getting closer.

"I'm obviously hopeful they can tie up the loose ends because I'm sure Matty just wants to get back to doing what he does best."
