Revs edge United in Eastern clash

The Revs (5-9-3) got a goal from midfielder Pat Phelan - his first career MLS goal - to spoil United coach Ben Olsen's debut after he took over on an interim basis for Curt Onalfo, who was fired earlier this week.

The game was physical in the early going, as is usually the case between the two Eastern rivals, but there was a lack of offensive buildup by either side until the closing minutes of the first half.

Phelan drew a foul in the offensive third, right in the middle of the field. New England's Chris Tierney took the chance and drove a long-range service into the United penalty area to Phelan, who headed past goalkeeper Bill Hamid in the 42nd minute.

That was all the scoring in the game, with no clear-cut chances be either team after the break.

The Revs will aim to build on the home win when they host the Houston Dynamo next Saturday, while United (3-13-3) will aim to get in the win column when it hosts FC Dallas the same day in its next MLS fixture.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008.
